It has a population of 17,333 people in the 2016 census. The name of the suburb is believed to be derived from the Indigenous Yugarabul word for ringtail possums, a marsupial native to the area.

Capalaba is a residential, commercial and light industrial area. It has two major shopping centres and a major bus station, as well as a number of parks and recreational facilities.

There are also several schools in the suburb, including Coolnwynpin State School and St Luke's Catholic Primary School. The main secondary school is Capalaba State College, which has both junior and senior campuses.

Almost everyone lives within close proximity to the centre of town, which is a huge benefit for local residents. It is also a convenient commute to the Brisbane CBD and airports, making it an attractive option for those working in the city or on the Gold Coast.

As part of the Redlands Council’s vision for the region, Capalaba has been identified as an important gateway hub to service the growing residential and commercial sectors of the area. A $250-million project has been hatched to deliver a town centre with new civic centres, a retail and entertainment precinct, and a green public realm.

The project is slated to commence next year, and the Redlands Investment Corporation has a deal in place with Shayher Group for the delivery of the 2.05ha site. This will create a new commercial and cultural hub that would bring the Redlands Coast community together.

Shayher Group will partner with the Redlands Investment Corporation to design and build the project, which will form an important part of Capalaba’s economic future. The development will include 850 residential homes, along with a sub-regional shopping centre.

This will allow the development of more than 21,000 new jobs and will help the area grow into a regional hub for employment, tourism, business and lifestyle activities. The 2.05ha site will also serve as the base for the Eastern Metro Study, which is a joint venture between Brisbane City Council and Redland City Council to investigate options to extend the Eastern Busway from UQ Lakes through to the Capalaba business district.

Currently, Capalaba is served by TransLink buses. There are regular services to Garden City bus station and the Upper Mount Gravatt busway station, along with Carindale bus station and the Brisbane central business district. The suburb is also linked to Cleveland railway line, as well as Victoria Point bus station.

Its location near the Brisbane CBD has helped it to become one of the most desirable residential areas in the region. The suburb is close to schools, shops and major transport routes, making it a great choice for families, young couples, and retirees.

The area has a wealth of recreational, cultural and community facilities that attract visitors from the region as well. The sprawling 14ha of open space at Capalaba Regional Park, for example, offers walking and cycling trails, a playground with flying fox and timber fort, picnic areas, barbecues and a stage for music and events.
